India’s Innovation Collaborative to Develop Model for Teaching Interdisciplinary Leadership Skills
India is hosting one of four “innovation collaboratives” selected by the Institute of Medicine’s Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education. Prof. Sanjay P. Zodpey, MD, PhD, Director of Public Health Education of the Public Health Foundation of India, presented their plans at the inaugural meeting of the Global Forum on March 8, 2012 in Washington, DC. Their project is to develop and pilot an innovative training model built on the interdisciplinary leadership skills they identify that are necessary in medicine, nursing and public health.
Members of their regional innovative collaborative are:
Public Health Foundation of India (launched a public health school in 2006 to address limited institutional capacity in India for strengthening training, research and policy development in public health; offers 7 diploma programmes, conducts trainings, undertakes research, and is involved in various initiatives related to health workforce development)
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (part of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences of Deemed University, which offers post-graduate diploma in Health Professions Education and master’s in Health Professions Education)
Symbiosis College of Nursing (part of Symbiosis International Deemed University)
“Twenty-first century healthcare challenges demand transformational educational reforms,” pointed out Prof. Zodpey. “Interdisciplinary leadership competencies will empower us to confront the 21st century challenges.”
Their plan includes:
• identifying leadership competencies through literature searches and other search strategies
• a two-day consultation with outside experts to generate suggestions and recommendations that will be the basis for training program development
• developing a training model and manual that integrates learning objectives and competencies for medical, nursing and public health education; and incorporates transformative learning, application of competencies to local health care settings, and relates to emerging health care challenges
• piloting the training model at partner institutes
• disseminating the findings
